Hi everyone,

welcome to the August 2022 edition of #fridaygeotrivia!

As is our tradition, on the final Friday of month we run a geotrivia contest on twitter under the hashtag #fridaygeotrivia. This month’s game was played Friday, 26th of August at 18:00 Berlin time, 5:00pm London time, noon New York time, and will begin when we tweet this months question.

See below for the rules of how to play.

As always, after the game is over we post the answers and winners here on the blog.

The August 2022 geotrivia question:

Everyone loves the beach. But not every country has a long coastline.

"Beach"

This month’s question: name non-island, non-landlocked countries that have a total length of coastline less than 100km.

  • Our definition of country is any country or dependent territory with its own ISO code
  • The country can not be an island or archipelago
  • The coastline must be on an ocean or sea (salt water)
  • For full credit your answer must include the #fridaygeotrivia hashtag and the emoji flag of the country

Prizes

#fridaygeotrivia is a game with two prizes:

  1. the sheer joy of geographic knowledge and pedantry.

  2. the bragging rights of getting the answer first.

The #fridaygeotrivia twitter thread:

The winner

A hard-fought contest resulting in a tie between Dave McLaughlin (who has won several times over the past year) and newcomer twitter user @kgbukin. Congrats!

This month’s geotrivia answer:

  • Belgium
  • Bosnia and Herzegovina
  • Dem. Rep. of the Congo
  • Gambia
  • Gibraltar
  • Iraq
  • Jordan
  • Lithuania, depending on how we count the coast of the Curonian Spit
  • Macau
  • Monaco
  • Palastine (Gaza Strip)
  • Slovenia
  • Togo

How to play

Anyone can join in, you just need a twitter account. Please note - these edition of the game was played long ago - these days we play on Mastodon, not twitter.

  • Reply to the question thread on twitter (embedded below) using the hashtag #fridaygeotrivia in your answer.

  • Only one answer per tweet

  • While you can use a map, please do NOT use the internet to just search for an answer. That is cheating and will lead to seriously bad geokarma.

  • To get full points for an answer it is good form not just to name the relevant country but (if possible) to include the emoji flags of the country.

Some people have complained the format is a bit chaotic and hard to follow. Yes, the mad chaos is part of the fun. Embrace it. The goal is just to have fun and learn. We win by playing

Thanks for playing,

Ed
